How should we package and store frozen food?

October 19, 2023

With the development of our society, the life quality of people is improving and meanwhile the pace of life is accelerating. People are increasingly pursuing fresher food, hoping that more and more food can be stored for a longer period of time without adding preservatives.

How to keep the food fresh and extend the storage time?

First of all, the food on the market which easily goes bad includes four major categories: Aquatic quick-frozen food; Fruit and vegetable quick-frozen food; Livestock quick-frozen food, such as pork, chicken, etc.; Prepared quick-frozen food, such as pasta, fish balls, tribute balls, fried chicken nuggets, squid steaks, and other dishes.

In a word, the food on the market can be frozen to extend the life. Freezing is one of the most widely used industrial food preservation methods in the world today. However, the refrigerator used for freezing is not a sterilization cabinet or a sterile zone. Low temperature can only inhibit the life activities of most bacteria and slow down the deterioration of food, but it cannot kill bacteria. Therefore, it is necessary to pack the frozen food in vacuum packaging bags     suitable for freezing to prevent the food from direct contact with the air and the refrigerator.

What are the advantages of vacuum bags?

        Let’s find out together!

        1. Vacuum packaging bags have relatively good impact resistance. After vacuum packaging, frozen food needs to be transported, loaded and unloaded, placed on shelves, etc. During these processes, frozen food is easily damaged by external forces. If Frozen food packaging bags have poor impact resistance, they not only affect the appearance of the packaged products, but also fails to their basic protection function. Thus, good packaging for frozen food is frozen vacuum bags.

        2.  They have good heat-sealing strength. The heat-sealing strength of common bags is not enough. As the heat-sealing temperature is too high, it can cause damage to the heat-sealing layer, resulting in a reduction in the protective performance of the common bags and a greatly shortened shelf life of the food. The food will not reach the corresponding shelf life.

But vacuum bags have good performance with heat strength, which can protect effectively from air or bacteria getting into the food.

        3. The interlayer peeling strength is high and the tensile force is good. Generally speaking, the mechanical properties of the vacuum bags are good, which can achieve its due load-bearing function and effectively protect the food packaged.

        4. The cold resistance is excellent. If the vacuum packaging bags can meet the requirements, the original performance of the materials be maintained at low temperatures.

        5. Frozen vacuum bags are easy to tear. The tearing strength won’t be too large or too small, which will cause the vacuum packaging bag to be easy to open or reduces the mechanical properties of the vacuum packaging bags.

How should our food be packaged at home to extend its shelf life?

For cooked food, it should be heated and sterilized before being packed in a vacuum bag or an antibacterial fresh-keeping bag. For some opened jams, we should seal them again before placing them in the refrigerator. For many fruits and vegetables, packaging foods that need to be refrigerated in antibacterial fresh-keeping bags/boxes and placing them in the refrigerator, or storing them in raw and cooked categories can effectively avoid bacterial cross-contamination. For the raw meat we just bought, we can package it in a frozen vacuum bag and place it in the refrigerator. With a frozen vacuum bag, it can also reduce the growth of bacteria so as to extend the shelf life of the meat.

How to choose a good frozen vacuum bag?

There are generally two types of quick-frozen and frozen vacuum bags on the market. Freezing vacuum bags only need to use cold-resistant and water-resistant films, while the films of quick-frozen vacuum packaging bags must not only be cold-resistant and water-resistant, but also require the film to have barrier properties. Quick-frozen and frozen products generally choose aluminized vacuum bags, aluminum foil vacuum packaging bags or other nylon composite vacuum packaging bags. They can also be selected according to customer requirements. Different materials have different properties. For example: aluminum plating has strong decorative properties, aluminum foil has good light-shielding and moisture-proof properties, etc. You can choose different materials according to the requirements of the product.
