The environmental trend in European Cup

July 24, 2024

The 2024 European Cup was held in Germany. In this land of football passion, a "green trend" has quietly been set off. As we all know, when the audience watches the game in the stands, they will drink water. After drinking, many of the audience will place the cups used for drinking water next to the designated recycling bins or seats. But in this game, we saw a little boy picking up cups in the stands. He picked up 43 cups in two minutes. Why did the little boy pick up cups? Because the little boy can return the 3 euro deposit after picking up the cups. The development of this "recycling cup fever" project quickly responded to this football event, and people's actions on this activity quickly heated up, becoming a hot topic inside and outside the stadium. This initiative aims to reduce the impact of disposable plastic waste on the environment by recycling plastic cups used during the event on a large scale.

The promotion of this event is a fusion of environmental protection concepts and technological innovation. The emergence of the European Cup recycling cup fever phenomenon is the result of the organizer's well-thought-out environmental protection strategy and technological innovation. Faced with the increasingly serious problem of plastic pollution, the European Cup Organizing Committee actively responded to the call of the international community and integrated the concept of environmental protection into every aspect of the event preparation and operation. On the one hand, through cooperation with professional environmental protection organizations, the organizing committee vigorously promotes the use of water cups made of degradable materials, and sets up convenient recycling points to encourage fans to actively participate in recycling activities. At the same time, with the help of advanced RFID technology, each water cup is given a unique identity, which enables the recycling process to be accurately tracked, greatly improving the recycling efficiency.

What’s more, the European Cup integrates environmental education into the viewing experience through the on-site large screen broadcast of environmental protection propaganda films, volunteer guidance and interpretation, etc., This aim is to enhance the public's awareness of plastic pollution problems and inspire everyone to spontaneously participate in this "green revolution". This entertaining way of education not only enhances the social responsibility of the event, but also enables the majority of fans to become active advocates of environmental protection actions while enjoying the football feast.

Faced with the increasingly serious environmental pollution, Europe continues to practice the concept of environmental protection through legislation. On June 17, 2024, the environment ministers of 27 EU countries reached a consensus at the Luxembourg meeting and voted to pass the landmark Nature Restoration Law. The Nature Restoration Law sets an ambitious goal, requiring EU member states to restore at least 20% of degraded ecosystems by 2030, and ultimately achieve the restoration of all ecosystems by 2050. This goal will cover a wide range of ecosystem types, including forests, grasslands, wetlands and oceans.

For food packaging, we are also constantly developing new environmentally friendly materials, committed to how to better use degradable materials and gradually eliminate some environmentally unfriendly packaging materials to protect our environment. Now we have gradually developed some "edible" environmentally friendly materials, such as cocoa beans or banana leaves to make packaging materials. At the same time, some of the environmentally friendly and degradable packaging materials are utilized, such as bio-based plastics.  polylactic acid (PLA), one of kind of bio-based plastics, are made from renewable resources like corn starch, degraded under certain conditions; Starch-based materials: starch is the main component and has good degradability; Paper materials, such as kraft paper, corrugated paper, etc., are recyclable and easily degradable.

At the same time, we are also gradually eliminating some packaging materials, such as traditional non-degradable plastics, including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), etc., which are difficult to degrade in the natural environment. As a result, they can cause long-term environmental pollution. In addition, polystyrene foam (EPS) is now gradually eliminated because it is difficult to recycle and not easy to degrade.

In addition, the production process is also simplified in terms of production technology, and environmentally friendly materials are used in the production process, from printing inks, composite glues, etc. Moreover, by continuously updating equipment and reducing electricity, we continue to practice green environmental protection actions.
